Holiday Outlook for eReaders and eBooks Even Better Than Previously Thought?

One of the main reasons why Forrester is correcting its forecast is the fact that prices have come down (and this report was actually written before the Amazon announcement). In addition, Forrester also sees increased consumer awareness thanks to the current media buzz around eReaders. While the Kindle was mentioned 8,680 times in news stories in 2008, it has been mentioned over 15,700 times in 2009 already (including the month of September). In addition, the fact that more content is now available and that manufacturers like iRex and Sony are backing the open ePub standard is also opening up the market to buyers who previously weren't interested in Amazon's closed Kindle ecosystem.

My thoughts -
1. I want an e-reader
2. e-books are here to stay. In sometime, we will all just be calling them books ;)
3. Don't argue about the format - focus on the experience of books
4. I might be in the right business. The publishing space is one of the most exciting spaces to be in now.
5. All this evolution in the space is great for the consumers + book authors. We just don't know it yet ;)

i am a bit skeptical in believing your forecast .. i dont dispute the fact that the popularity of e-books will rise exponentially, however i have serious doubts if it can actually REPLACE the printing press !! because no matter how much technology grows ( and no matter how popular devices like kindle get), we can never replace the joy that any true bibliophile receives in holding the paperback/hardover book, he enjoys getting lost in the characters which are unravelling themselves page wise in front of him. these arguements may not sound so convincing, but go and ask any bibliophile and they will invariably say they love the paper .. maybe we are irrational romantics ..

Recently, vir sanghvi wrote an article on his website titled : " Even if kindle catches on, there will always be a market for books " ,here is the link : http://www.virsanghvi.com/vir-world-ArticleDetail.aspx?ID=320

pls make sure you read it.

I doubt books will go anywhere anytime at all. It has never been about replacing the printing press. It is just another space that is evolving - so nothing new there.
And no, I will continue to curl up in bed with books :)
